Introduction: Between the tall glass buildings of Connaught place one will see a mesmerizing red and yellow temple. Temple has a name ‘Laxmi Narayan mandir’ or popularly known as ‘Birla mandir’. Shrine covers the area of almost 7.7acres approximately. Temple is dedicated to ‘Laxmi’ the hindu goddess of wealth, and ‘Narayana’ the preserver. Temple houses many idols of Hindu deities such as Lord krishna, Lord Shiva and Maa durga. There is also a shrine dedicated to Lord Buddha. At the entrance, there is cordial welcome for the people of all faiths and classes including Harijans. The three-storied temple is built in the Nagara style of temple architecture. More than hundred skilled artisans from Banaras made the icons of the temple. The walls and the upper gallery are full of paintings carried out by artists from Jaipur in Rajasthan. Walls have carving of symbols and quotes from ‘Bhagvad Gita’ the holy book of hindu religion. The Temple complex is decorated with many small temples as well as unreal small hills and artificial waterfalls are also there which seek more attraction from children and tourists. A visit to this temple will worth it is decorated during Diwali and Janamashtmi.

History: The construction was started in 1932 and took almost 6 years to be completed in the year 1938. Siris chatterjee was appointed as the designer of the mandir. ‘Father of the Nation’ inaugurated this beautiful temple on the condition that the temple would be open to people of all races. He wanted all Hindu religious sects including the poor and untouchables worship freely in here. This temple has been proved a symbol of secularism in India. Mandir was built by well known industrialist BD birla.
