Malai mandir

Introduction: A very important temple to the tamil community in delhi, “Sree Uttara Swami Malai” locally known as Malai mandir. Where “malai” is a tamil word having the meaning of Mountain. While entering one can see a small hoarding where “Yaamirukka Bayamain” written on it which literally means “Why fear when I am here!”. Temple is situated in Sector 7, Ramakrishnapuram. Complex consists of four temples, including the temples of Ganesh, lord Shiva, Parvati. Temple dedicates Sree Swaminatha Swami, Sree Karpaga Vinayakar, Sree Sundareswarar, Devi Meenakshi, The Navagraha Sannidhi, Sree Idumban Sannidhi, Sree Adi Sankara Hall and Silpa Kala Mandapam. Malai mandir has become an important landmark of Delhi. The temple building is built entirely of granite. All the main idols of the temple are made of black granite stone. Temple reflects the glorious Chola style of South Indian Temple Architecture. Walls and roof are very beautifully decorated with wonderful art work. The temple has adopted a peacock as its pet which can be seen and heard among the trees in the temple’s compound. There is also a place in the temple premises where cultural programmes are organised.

History: The search for a suitable elevated place commenced in 1961. The hillock was acquired in 1963 by Śrī O.V. Alagesan, then Minister of Petroleum and Chemicals. On Sep 8 1965, The foundation stone of the temple was laid by M. Bhakthavatsalam who was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. On June 2, 1967, the Sila Sangrahanam (stone acquiring) ceremony for the Moola Vigraham of Lord Swaminatha was performed at Tirunelveli. On Septermber 1969, the foundation work was completed.
