Gurudwara Nanak Piao

Introduction: Gurudwara Nanak Piao sahib is located in north Delhi on Grand Trunk Road popularly known as GT Road. Then word “Piao” means the place where they offer water to the thirsty people for free. This Gurudwara is dedicated to shri Guru Nanak Dev the first Sikh Guru. Just like today even at that time G.T Karnal Road used to be a busy way through which a large number of travelers passed. Guru Ji dug a deep well and also built a small permanent “piao” to provide fresh water to the thirsty people. He used to serve drinking water with his own hands. This well is still preserved as a sacred well to all his thirsty visitors and can be seen today in the Gurudwara premises covered with a white dome with decorated pillars. The Gurudwara is surrounded by a huge garden which is now turned to be a place of pilgrimage for the Devotees.

History: It was said that the Guru nanak had won the admiration of all the Hindu and Muslim divines and can change a dead thing Alive. One day Emperor Sikander Shah Lodhi called him when one of his favorite royal elephant died, he sent for the Guru and requested him to revive his elephant too as he had saved a life of an elephant which was declared dead. But the Guru Nanak refused to do so. Being denied, Sikander Lodhi immediately imprisoned the Guru. During the period of imprisonment Guru ji used to treat the prisoners and jail staff. On July 3 1505, While Guru Nanak was imprisoned, a great earthquake shook Delhi. According to the devotees, this was happened just because the Guru Nanak was imprisoned by the Emperor. After the earthquake many people went to the court of Sultan and ask him to release the Guru, the Emperor agreed and released guruji from the prison.
