Introduction: We all know that the mughals loved gardens and it is clearly visible in the Humayun’s tomb. Humayun was the second Mughal emperor. Tomb is located in the eastern part of Dehli i.e Nizamuddin. Humayun’s tomb is one of the best preserved Mughal monuments. In many ways this magnificent red and white palace is as beautiful as Taj mahal at Agra. The height of tomb is more than 46 meters (approximately) and its breadth is more than 90 meters (approximately). The tomb was constructed at a cost of more than 15lacs (1.5 million) designed by a Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyasuddin. He was employed by Haji Begum.
The Complex houses several other monuments including
- Tomb of Hamida Begum – The wife of Mughal Emperor Humayun
- Tomb of Dara Shikoh – The son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan
- Tombs of Farrukhsiyar
- Tomb of Jahandar Shah
- Tomb of Alamgir II
- Tomb of Rafi Ul-Darjat and
- Tomb of Rafi Ud-Daulat.
Not only this, the Complex houses more than a hundred graves of which some are known and some are still unknown.
Complex area also houses the tomb complex of Isa Khan Niyazi, an Afghan noble in Sher Shah Suri’s court of the Suri dynasty, who fought against the Mughals, constructed in 1547 CE. It is the first distinct example of proper Mughal style, which was inspired by Persian architecture.
History: The construction of this great tomb was supervised by Hamida banu begum or Haji begum. She was the second wife of the second Mughal emperor Humayun and the mother of the third Mughal emperor Akbar. The construction of tomb was started by her after nine year after the death of Emperor. Humayun tomb was the first garden tomb on the Indian subcontinent. Several members of the Mughal royal family are buried in the mausoleum and many tombstones can be seen on the terrace area of the tomb.
