St. Stephen’s Church

Introduction: St. stephen’s church is a church of North India. It was built in the gothic romanesque style  by Anglican missionaries. Church has tall a bell tower and wonderful stained glass rose windows. Church also has arched windows which allow the sunlight to brighten the interiors. One can see the marvelous interior well maintained with motifs, carvings, pictures and beautiful furniture. All the Delhi buildings which are associated with St. Stephen’s  namely the famous St. Stephen’s College and St. Stephen’s Hospital and st. Stephen’s church are red in colour. It is said to symbolize not only the blood of St. Stephen but also the first Christian martyrs who were killed during the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

History: It was a small and attractive church built in 1865 as a memorial to the Britishers who died in the revolts of 1857. This church was established by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, a group of English missionaries and was intended for the use of Indian converts to the Church of England.
